The limousine-style Bentley Mulsanne has had two leases of life - first between 1980 and 1992, and then from 2010 to 2020. The first generation was the first model independently designed by Bentley since 1930, when the company started sharing platforms with Rolls-Royce. The Mulsanne takes its name from the long, fast straight on the Le Mans circuit where Bentleys have won six 24-hour races. Both generations of the Mulsanne were powered by a 6.75-litre Rolls-Royce V8 engine, initially with twin carburettors but later fuel injection, and with an overriding aim of offering effortless torque, even from low revs.

The later version fitted into the Bentley range replacing the previous flagship Arnage model, and saw the engine upgraded to meet the newest Euro V emissions regulations. Externally, individuality was the name of the game again, with 114 different body colours offered. Inside it was a similar story, with 21 carpets, nine wood veneers and 24 leather upholstery permutations. Praise was given to the Mulsanne by Autocar's reviewers for "the uniqueness of its interior fittings and for the tactile material quality", and for having almost the same headroom in the back as a Range Rover. It concluded: "The Mulsanne offers the owner-driver a truly enjoyable experience at the wheel".
