Other than its own in-house tuning and special vehicle division AMG, Brabus is the world’s largest tuner and developer of modifications for Mercedes-Benz vehicles, along with those of the three-pointed star’s subsidiary companies, Smart and Maybach. Like several other companies in this field, Brabus grew out of one man’s desire to customise his cars to his own requirements, but finding that existing companies and their products didn’t meet his exacting demands.
That man was Bodo Buschman, who in 1977 joined up with his friend Klaus Brackmann to set up the company, taking its name from an amalgam of the first three letters of each of their surnames. However, Brackmann’s involvement was short-lived, and he sold his stake in the company to his friend for the equivalent of just 100 euros. The business opened its first dedicated showroom in 1983 and has grown strongly in the ensuing 40-plus years. In 2012 it took over an old railway workshop in its home town of Bottrop in Germany’s industrial heartland, spending more than £4million to transform the site, including fitting it out with the latest computer-controlled milling machines.
